Restaurant Bieberbau Berlin
Located at Durlacher Str. 15 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, the Bieberbau is a remarkable remnant of a former studio and residential building from the late 19th century.
Originally constructed in 1893–1894 by Wilhelm Walther for the sculptor Richard Bieber, the building suffered severe damage during World War II when it was almost entirely destroyed by a firebomb. What remains today are the rooms that now house the restaurant, preserving their extraordinary interior character.
The elaborate stucco decorations that still adorn the space were crafted by highly skilled students and trained artisans from Bieber’s own plastering and sculpting workshop.
These ornamental works reflect themes drawn from mythology and rural life and demonstrate an exceptional level of technical mastery. Their organic forms and refined execution offer a rare glimpse into the stucco craftsmanship that flourished in Berlin around the turn of the 20th century.
Beyond its architectural value, the Bieberbau also holds significant artistic heritage. The backyard once accommodated several studios, including those used by the expressionist group Die Brücke.
Between 1910 and 1913, renowned artists Max Pechstein and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner worked here, adding an important chapter of modern art history to this unique site.
